Song Lyrics

Left Work Early

Tonight I’m on a mission, no time for indecision
There’s a party waiting somewhere for me
Been waiting on the weekend and feeling kinda freaky
And now it’s time to get out and release my inner creep

Could’ve spent a lifetime trying to be a nice guy
Hoping everybody makes amends
Instead I learned the tough way, you gotta be a roughneck
Cuz when everybody’s stealing, everybody wins

I was thinkin bout drinking, and then I got to thinking
That there’s got to be a better way
To keep my mind off working, I’m feeling kinda worthless
It’s time to blow the doors off and ditch this fuckin place

I left work early but I didn’t go home
I’m fixin to booze and there’s a watering hole
Over the bridge and past the old farm road
I left work early but I didn’t go home

Make no bones about it, I was feeling pretty rowdy
And my irresponsibility
Left me in a pickle, I was only gettin sicker
Drinking everything but the kitchen sink

I left work early but I didn’t go home
I’m fixin to booze and there’s a watering hole
Over the bridge and past the old farm road
I left work early but I didn’t go home

September

C’mon baby, take a ride in my car
Put the top down, we don’t have to go far
Weather’s changing and the summer’s almost gone
That’s it darlin’, feel the wind in your hair
Close your eyes, we can go anywhere
Weather’s changing and the summer’s almost gone

September’s gonna be a surprise
When I look into my baby’s eyes

C’mon baby, let’s take a walk on the shore
Wind is blowing, but we don’t care anymore
Weather’s changing and the summer’s almost gone
Come with me, we’ll go outside in rain
One more time, ’cause we can’t go back again
Weather’s changing and the summer’s almost gone

September’s gonna be a surprise
When I look into my baby’s eyes

Come September, oh I ain’t afraid to change with you
Come September, let me be the one you hold onto
I’ll take a chance on you
Can’t wait to see what we will do
Come September, oh I ain’t afraid to change with you
Come September, let me be the one you hold onto
Come September, oh I ain’t afraid to change with you
Come September, let me be the one you hold onto

All she wants to do is run away, fly away
All she wants to do is run away, fly away

Awakening

Hiding in the shadows of the city light
She’s lost within the rhythm of a Friday night
She doesn’t understand the way the morning light brings awakening

In the darkness of the hour ‘neath a scattered moon
Moving pictures in the hall outside the hotel room
He sees a ray of light and knows it’s coming soon – the awakening

Now you have gone too far
It was yours, not ours
Falling forever toward the light
Giving you the sense of being home

Lying on the rooftop where she made her bed
Try to reconcile the dissonance inside her head
It’s the road of indecision that she walks instead of awakening

Now maybe he was wrong to be the only one
But there’s got to be a reason that he’s on the run
And he’s knows, one thing is bound to come – his awakening

Now you have gone too far
It was yours, not ours
Falling forever toward the light
Giving you the sense of being home

Lying on the rooftop where she made her bed
Try to reconcile the dissonance inside her head
It’s the road of indecision that she walks instead of awakening

Oh, awakening

The Valley

Down into the valley, away I take my head,
Sinking ever deeper, not remembering’ what’s been said.
All the things I used to know, are rising up away;
The mountain’s grasp is slipping now, just like the fading day.

Waiting for the rising road, which never seems to come.
See the light shine on and on, and on and on we run.
The longer road, the more I know, just how far I’ve come.
Darkness comes without a word, and as I sing my song…

Down into the valley
Runnin’ from the light of day
Melt away the sunshine
What else do I have to say?
Get the colored wax burning
Bring out the glass and green
Say a prayer for tomorrow
It’s something that we’ve never seen.

Getting late and burning low, light fading into black
That time of night has come, when there’s no turning back
Come so far, far from home, reaching for the stars
Though I sink, the world turns on, as we sing this song…

Down into the valley
Runnin’ from the light of day
Melt away the sunshine
What else do I have to say?
Get the colored wax burning
Bring out the glass and green
Say a prayer for tomorrow
It’s something that we’ve never seen.

[Outro]
Rise above, all the things we should have known.
Rise above, all the things we should have done.
Rise above, all the ones we could not hold.
Rise above, all the things we can’t let go.

Hey Jane

Hey Jane,
What’d you say the other day to me?
“Be Free”
With all your life to see, what does it say?
Hey Jane,
Don’t you know the way it’s supposed to be?
“I’m Free, I’m Free”

Stay … Don’t let me sleep tonight
Ride … the backyard rail car delight

Cold wind blows over the mountain
Never let ‘em see you’re down and out, and
Big wheel turn to tell you that you’re through
Sometimes all that you can say, is “Hey Jane”

Hey Jane,
I can’t help the way you feel the light
“So Right”
But could I help to light your only way?
Hey Jane,
Lose the mask and lost your will to fight.
“Take flight, take flight.”

How … does empty bottled mashup feel, with
All … your secret little turpentile

Cold wind blows over the mountain
Never let ‘em see you’re down and out, and
Big wheel turn to tell you that you’re through
Sometimes all that you can say, is “Hey Jane”

Whiskey, Wind and Wheat

Out beyond the weathervane, and twice a shout from home
I’m on my own
Whiskey, wind and wheat have been all I’ve ever known
And I have grown

This night is calling
This night is calling

I can’t find a tree to climb that doesn’t face the wind
And I won’t take that fall again
My only claim to legacy has blown beyond my fence
And now it’s dead

This night is calling
This night is calling
This night is calling
This night is calling

Stop wasting love on others lips
Quit stealing from my fingertips
You’re drying streams with crying eyes
And burning these dreams alive
Bring them back to life

And the wheat’s gone today
And faces give meaning to space left for dead
We’re all moved by the day
A new way to see and a new way to give

Don’t uproot the proof of past generations
You’re raping my mind and the memories in it
And your pretty eyes, they can’t replace
The warm scent of a life that laid here before you
And all is silent now, and all is silent now

New way to see and a new way to give
New way to see and a new way to give

Out beyond the weathervane, and twice a shout from home
I’m on my own
Whiskey, wind and wheat have been all I’ve ever known
And I have grown

I Can’t Stay Here

You’re Gone
You’re Gone
You’re Gone and I Can’t Stay Here
A Long Light Awakening

  1. not The Dude

I was recently listening and transcribing the lyrics for this song so I can rip it off and make lots of money on my own playing it in foreign lands without your knowledge or consent.

Everything was pretty close except this stanza. Here’s what I had:

Don’t open the groove, passionate nations
You’re raping my mind with every waking
Open your eyes, they can’t replace them
All center the lies, baby before you would
Know inside you now, you know inside you now
