View From the Stage – Laughing Goat and RiverFest Notes & Set List

Last week Zen Mustache played back-to-back shows on Saturday night at the Laughing Goat in Boulder, and again on Sunday afternoon at the South Platte RiverFest in Denver. Both dynamic, energizing and fun shows! Some stark differences, too.

I’ve written before about the tight stage at the Laughing Goat. The venue’s small space and eclectic adornments, along with close proximity to the audience, inject energy into the performance. To fit the entire band on stage I can’t bring my usual keyboard rig and instead play the house acoustic piano. Fortunately it is always in tune. The odd thing in the Goat is the piano faces the wall, away from the band and away from the audience. Consequently, for me this show became a highly audio experience; rather than making eye contact with band mates I needed to listen closely to the others and feel the changes in the music. It’s a different experience altogether and one I appreciated. I also love playing acoustic – feel I can play harder and faster and my confidence is higher moving fingers over real ivory.

One other note. It’s satisfying to introduce new material and on this night we performed ‘In A Day’ for the first time. This is a vocal-focused song with 4-part harmony supported by simple piano and guitar lines.

If Saturday night was cool, Sunday afternoon turned hot at Confluence Park in Denver! The RiverFest was a great way to cool things down. The festival was well-organized and the friendly staff were so helpful making us feel comfortable and welcome. What a terrific event!

In contrast with the previous night, my takeaway from this show was all the visual scenery. Keyboards were positioned stage left which provided a vantage point to view not just the people who pitched blankets in the grassy area in front of the stage, but also all the kayaks, tubes, paddle boards, and people generally enjoying the river. Ted came over to this side of the stage to play bass on ‘September’ and gawked at the fantastic view from this side of the stage. My favorite was looking across the river at the people on the opposite side. After our set I crossed the water to check it out and those spectators had a wonderful view of everything – the stage, the water, the vendors and people. If Ted was gawking from the stage, he should have made his way over there – that was the place for onlookers to truly gawk!

It’s good to see the movement toward more originals. For this set the original:cover ratio was 1:1. In past shows this has been as high as 1:4! The process of writing and introducing new original music continues, and we look forward to the goal of an entire original show!

Final note: The sun and heat was intense on Sunday. In fact my Korg keyboard, positioned at the front of the stage, was not protected by shade and the LED screen on this keyboard got fried during the performance! Hoping it’ll come back but luckily that day was the final performance for the Korg – switching to the new Hammond XK-3 this summer and repurposing the Korg for home recording. Whew!

Chalk Art Festival 6-1-2014 – Notes and Set List

Last week Zen Mustache played at the Denver Chalk Art Festival. We played this event last time it was held and this year was just a terrific as then. Couple things that stand out:

1. Trey, the event coordinator, was super-relaxed and easy to work with. Parking could have been a chore, but with Trey’s support we enjoyed a blissfully easy time managing vehicles.
2. Dano, the sound engineer, was the consummate professional to work with. From the moment we arrived on his stage, Dano made us feel valuable and respected, and he clearly had his system tightly dialed to serve the crowd and the performers.
3. This is a great festival! Loads of terrific street artwork to view, great vendors and interesting exhibits. After our set we toured the festival for awhile, taking in the sights and sounds on a brilliant and hot summer afternoon.
4. We had some visitors come out to see us who we didn’t expect to see. You know who you are – thank you for coming! It’s always wonderful to see your friendly faces lurking in the crowd.

Also wanted to make a quick note about the night before the festival. Our friends Clayton and Jenny got hitched out at Frog Belly Farm north of Boulder. These guys threw a heck of wedding! All outdoors, the ceremony in a field and the reception in an adjacent field. Dinner served by food truck and guests playing bean bag toss and other games. Bonfire, open bar, and the band played in the barn. Loads of fun and we wish Clayton and Jenny the very best – thank you for including us in your wedding festivities!

Finding the Balance – Upslope Notes & Set List

We had a blast playing music last night at the Upslope Brewery tap room. The band had been off stage for a few months, so getting back in front of the crowd with a live performance was like taking in lungfuls of fresh outdoor mountain air. Breathing life and energy into the soul! The staff at Upslope was incredibly friendly and attentive – seriously, people, if you need a pick-me-up go find those friendly Upslope faces, grab a chair and kick back — they’ll be your great friends for at least a couple hours.

The evening was a balancing act. On one hand, leaning into the music and listening; on the other, relentless enthusiasm from the crowd that simultaneously energizes and distracts. On one hand, finding space for each instrument and trusting each other; on the other, external drama that competed for our attention. On one hand, seeing friends and fans in the crowd who we’ve missed dearly; on the other, missing the faces of others we wished could be there. It’s the great balancing act of the performer – staying connected to the moment and the people and the environment while still reaching inside to tap into the passion and give it away.

Frozen Dead Guys Days – Salute and Set List

Dear frozen dead guy,

We were so sorry to hear that you had passed. Really. It was a shame and a real loss, we’re sure to you especially. But then someone went and started an annual party to remember you. Over the years the party has become filled with strange rituals embodying the warped fringes of human imagination. Like flinging frozen fish. Snow volleyball. Brain freeze contests. Costume-clad humans plunging themselves into freezing water. Coffin racing. Each act disturbing in its own right.

But along with the weirdness come friendly faces. Handshaking and backslapping and people calling hellos across the street. Shopkeepers and townspeople opening their doors to strangers for a few days. Tents full of people and music. And in the midst of your physical absence something descends on the caricature crowd navigating muddy streets. Difficult to put a finger on, the longer one dwells within it the more palpable it becomes.

It is THE VIBE. It is the mood and temperament that begins to permeate every event and location. THE VIBE is why we come here, and why we want to come back. THE VIBE is not possible when we are alone, battling our individual life challenges in the relentless pursuit of who knows what. THE VIBE only appears when we come together, with no real purpose other than to experience THE VIBE. Which, really, means to be in revelry with one another.

And so, frozen dead guy, we thank you for the gift you have given us through your most unlucky demise. For you have bestowed a reason to gather, a means to build THE VIBE. The games, the music, the entire scene, is our tribute to you, and we salute you.

May THE VIBE we experienced today at Frozen Dead Guy Days in Nederland return, year after year, for it was deeply felt, and dearly enjoyed. Hell yeah!

Brrr! Shivering at WinterFest – Notes & Set List

A Christmas Story - Tongue
Today we set a record for our coldest outdoor performance ever at WinterFest on Old South Pearl in Denver. None of us were too worried about our body core temperature – it was the extremities, in particular the fingers, that were of concern. Single digit temps have a way of slowing down the performance, when there’s no way to play with gloves and there’s no chance to keep those digits truly warm. Even keeping instruments in tune proved to be a challenge. That we pulled off any solos can only be attributed to some spiritual intervention. It’s all part of the adventure of live music, and thankfully our set was 90 minutes, just within the pain tolerance threshold.

With hand warmers in our pockets and propane heaters lit, we took the stage and enjoyed the company of other adventurous folks who navigated the icy streets for a bit of shopping, hot cider, sleigh rides, and tree finding. We even had visits from an 8-ft snowman and a funny walking Christmas tree. With incomparable sound technician Allen Noftall of Space Recording and Live Sound on the job, we made the best of a cold situation. Thanks, Allen, for making the sound seem so easy! And many thanks to Marilyn, Allison, and Nicole at HobNob Events for inviting us to WinterFest. We hope to be back again next year – hopefully about 40 degrees warmer…(!)

By the way, with a performance like this under our belts, I think we’re ready to play Frozen Dead Guys Days in Nederland in March. That’s right people! Look for Zen Mustache on the FDGD stage – so pumped!!

Laughing Goat Set List and Notes

Fun times at The Laughing Goat last night! We went in having played the Goat once before, but never really knowing what to expect trying to squeeze our 7-piece band onto a stage better suited for 3. We had a nice write-up in the Boulder Weekly, and we had a few surprise visits from folks who hadn’t seen us before, who made the trip to the Goat. Solo artist Eugene Christopher kicked things off setting the mood with soulful vocals over a lone acoustic guitar. Then we quickly sardined ourselves onto the stage. Throughout the night Phil’s bass guitar rapped my head and Kyle’s ass was in my shoulder blades. Few people could see me but if they had they would have seen a mile-wide grin across my face. For all the activities the band does as a group, from writing to recording to traveling to just hanging out, there’s nothing better for the soul than actually playing music together. I don’t care where – in the basement or in a field or on a stage – but I have to say The Laughing Goat is way up there for fun places to play.

Benefit for Farmers at Balistreri Vineyards

Short but sweet set last night at the Balistreri Vineyards in Denver. ZM got invited to play a benefit concert to help front range farmers who were affected by the floods this past September. A long afternoon load-in was rewarded with meeting lots of terrific, authentic, local people and sharing a meal that everyone raved was over-the-top amazing. The space over at Balistreri Vineyards was impressive, too. Cathedral-like vaulted ceilings supported with huge glulam timber beams; tasteful furnishings and finishes in every aspect; it was worth the trip just to view the space and I hope ZM has an opportunity to play there again some day.

Push to Publish

Last week’s gig at Bands on the Bricks was a great opportunity for Zen Mustache. We saw a chance to get our sound in front of a lot of people, and a diverse group at that. To prepare, we not only wanted to tighten up our set and put forth our best performance, we also wanted to have some physical handouts that people could take with them and hopefully remember us.

To that end we spent a great deal of energy over the summer getting recordings in place for a short 5-song EP, which we titled Midday Buzz. A lot of long nights, especially from Justin (our drummer) in his recording studio. But we were very happy with the final product on three newly minted songs: The Valley, Left Work Early, and Awakening. The other two songs, Hey Jane and Whiskey, Wind & Wheat, had been recorded previously.

The truth is we pushed the envelope trying to get CD’s ready in time for the show at Bands on the Bricks. We were still recording tracks less than a week before, and Justin was mixing all the way until Tuesday night (the day before!) That Tuesday night we had a CD burning party – burning 100 CD’s while doing an acoustic rehearsal in prep for Wednesday’s show. At time things got a little silly, and usually that was Phil’s doing.http://www.zenmustache.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/PhilsBall.jpg

But the CD’s weren’t the only project. In addition we created stickers with the ZM logo and on the back of 250 stickers we printed download codes for people to go grab our music online at our bandcamp website.

Overall the experience was a bit like pulling together a term project in college – a team of people, each with different skills, a pretty clear vision of what we wanted to accomplish, and a deadline. And it came right down to the deadline, too, with Kyle and Emily manually stamping the CD covers just an hour before we went on stage! We definitely set ourselves up for several long nights for the band, but it was worth it. In the end I was impressed with the way everyone came through and I was personally proud of what we accomplished. I can’t think of a better cast of characters I’d rather work on a project like this than the ZM gang. Great work you guys – thanks for everything!

Great energy last week at Bands on the Bricks last week. Thank you Boulder! It was a real pleasure to be out there on stage with the crowd feeding back positive energy all night. Cactus Jack’s 8-11-2013

Wanted to record the set list and notes from this gig in Evergreen. For me personally it was a fun gig because it came straight after a camping weekend. Rained Friday just before arriving (we camped outside of Jefferson, near the Colorado Trail) and threatened to rain all weekend but never did anything. Sunday morning we packed up and Cheryl + the kids dropped me off in Evergreen on their way home. Phil, who was watching Sienna for the weekend, drove my gear-packed Explorer to Evergreen, and we drove back to Boulder together at the end of the night.

This was nothing compared with Geoff’s logistics. He played the Campbell Rain Dance show on Saturday 8/3, drove to a wedding in the mountains on 8/4, spent all week camping with his extended family in Steamboat, then drove to Salida for another wedding on 8/10, before waking up in Salida and driving to Evergreen for this gig on 8/11. Crazy!

The gig itself was a lot of fun. The waitstaff at Cactus Jack’s are some of the best and friendliest we’ve met, and Jessica, who took care of us, was no exception. We got rained on about 2/3 through our first set and a lot of the patio cleared out, but we just played through and eventually more people filled up the patio.

It was especially fun to see Joe and Melissa whom we hadn’t seen in a while. They got a chance to meet Emily and get to know her. We saw Mandy, Sarah and Julie. Overall it was a chill scene. We used the opportunity to run through the set as we intended to perform at Bands on the Bricks, and deviated only a little. Really the only regret was we saw many of Emily’s friends come in at the start of the third set, but unfortunately she hasn’t learned those songs and sat out most of the set. They hung around until we were loaded out, so based on what they saw, those friends probably think Emily is a glorified cable-wrapper. 🙂

Overall a really nice afternoon of music, without a lot of stress.
